PORT HARCOURT—Human Rights Community in Rivers State, yesterday, urged the state Police Command to stop giving contradictory reports on the murder of the frontline Port Harcourt activist and lawyer, Mr. Ken Atsuwete. The body enjoined the police to give a straight report that would lead to the unravelling of persons behind the killing.

It will be recalled that after the murder of Atsuwete in the early hours on Monday in Aluu community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state by unknown persons, the police allegedly gave two different reports. The police had allegedly said the death was as a result of attempted kidnap and later said that the rights lawyer was assassinated.

Addressing newsmen in Port Harcourt, yesterday, the Deputy Director for Communications and Relations of the body, Mr. Livingstone Wechie, said it was disheartening that the police would give two different reports on the same murder.

Wechie wondered why the police would be in a haste to give report of preliminary investigation, stressing that the people of the state expect the police to carry out a thorough investigation. He urged the police to carry out a straight investigation and name the people behind the murder.

Wechie said: “Police should tell us who killed Atsuwete. The police owe us the duty of unravelling the ministry behind those who killed him. Police should straighten their reports to avoid contradictions. The killing is an attack on the civil rights community. There is no justification for Atsuwete’s murder.

“We feel very pained that Ken was killed by unidentified gunmen. The news of his assassination came to us as a rude shock because of his role in human rights promotion in the state. The police should use this to prove themselves. Anything short of this will make people resort to self help. They should ensure that there are no contradictions in their findings.”

Wechie, however, maintained that that the group would continue to pressurize the police to ensure that the issue was not abandoned.
