YENAGOA—AGGRIEVED All Progressives Congress, APC, members in Bayelsa State loyal to the former governor of the state and candidate of the party in the last governorship election, Chief Timipre Sylva, weekend, sent a protest letter to President Muhammadu Buhari over the modalities adopted in the appointment into the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.
According to the Sylva loyalists, though the APC and its members appreciate the recognition given to Bayelsa State in terms of federal appointments, the recent appointment of Professor Nelson Brambaifa was biased and causing disunity within the fold of the party in the state.
The Sylva loyalists, led by the member representing Brass Constituency I in Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Israel Sunny- Goli, said that the nomination of Prof. Brambaifa has disrupted the fair and equitable arrangement in Bayelsa APC.
They argued that the current Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, is from Ekeremor Local Government Area, in Bayelsa West senatorial district, while the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, General Paul Boroh (retd.), is from Sagbama Local Government Area also from Bayelsa West.
They noted that though President Buhari might not be aware of it, they alleged the former governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi of meddling in the affairs of Bayelsa State by foisting the appointment of Brambiafa on the people.
Sunny- Goli, who also double as the State House Committee Chairman on NDDC, pointed out that the appointments so far made from Bayelsa State by President Buhari was eroding cohesion and causing party disunity as they were all concentrated in one senatorial district of the state.
According to him, “The party was shocked when its nominee, who had been agreed on by all stakeholders, could not make the final list because (allegedly) Amaechi had claimed that Buhari directed him to nominate the state representatives from the Niger Delta States based on his position as the Director- General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation.
“If the nomination is not reversed, it means that other senatorial districts that campaigned against the Jonathan government for the enthronement of the change government have been excluded with grave implications for party cohesion.”
Condemning the attempts to sideline APC leaders in the state by foisting people on them, the lawmaker noted that “Amaechi should confine himself to Rivers state and leave other South- South states alone.”
He said, “APC members still believe in the ideology of the Buhari government and would want him to reverse the nomination to assuage the ill feelings some members have towards the Federal Government.”
