Seven top officials have been indicted by the Governing Council of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Ijanikin, for allegedly misappropriating the institution funds.
The action of the officials, Sunday Vanguard gathered, has put the institution in financial mess.
Sources said, that before the financial challenges, the institution had annual revenue of N1.6 billion. Consequently, the institution usually paid staff salaries before Lagos State government releases its monthly subvention of N135 million.
But now, the sources said, the College waits for state government to release the subvention before paying staff salaries, even after the subvention was increased to N200 million.
The misappropriation of funds in the institution was said to have been noticed following which former Governor Babatunde Fashola directed the state Auditor-General, Mrs. Helen Deile, to audit AOCOED accounts.
After the Auditor General submitted her report, the new AOCOED Governing Council set up Staff Disciplinary Committee of Council and Ad-hoc Disciplinary Committee to investigate the officials listed in the report. The Governing Council sent the officers on compulsory leave.
On August 3, 2016, at the second 2016 regular meeting, the Governing Council adopted the report of the Staff Disciplinary Committee indicting the seven officials.
Chairman of the AOCOED Governing Council, Professor Tunde Samuel, declined comments on the yet to be published recommendations on the officers.
But the College’s spokesperson, Mr. Adebowale Odunayo, confirmed internal publication on the alleged fraud, saying “it was an extract from the council meeting”. Meanwhile, the AOCOED Senior Staff Union in Colleges of Education in Nigeria (SSUCOEN), Comrade Wunmi Ombugadu, demanded the publication of the entire report of the disciplinary committee: saying: “We want the entire report in the public domain and enforced accordingly.” She lamented that in the publication of the report would serve as deterrent to officers who may want to commit fraud in future in the institution.
Also, Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), AOCED Chapter said: “We are appealing to civil society groups, the NLC, eminent lawyers, journalists, student union leaders, religious leaders and traditional rulers, judges and the masses to prevail on AOCOED Council to do the needful on the report to save the College from being financially crippled.”
