Business comes to Halt in Akwa – Ibom for IPOB

Business is reported to have come to a halt in Akwa-Ibom as the public and businesses heeded the call for a stay-away protest to pressure the government to free Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and other activists held in custody.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) organised the protest on Friday. According to the IPOB ally, Biafra Nations Youth League (BNYL), some private investors have shut down their companies and industries especially in Obubra, Uyo where two prominent elders shut down their business.

“The sit at home is effective in Akwa-Ibom,” said BNYL Media and Publicity Secretary, Mmeyene Etim Archibong.

Meanwhile, fisherman in the Bakassi Pensinsula have reportedly abandoned their boats and stayed at home in support of the stay-way.

Archibong confirmed the purpose of the sit at home was “to bring down Nigeria economy in protest against the continued detention of Kanu, Benjamin Onwuka and all those held hostage by Nigeria government.”

Kanu was arrested last October and is held on charges of “criminal conspiracy, intimidation and membership of an illegal organization.”

Government has defied court orders to release him.
